Hi all,

I’ve completed the site I made for my solutions from first semester in Physics graduate school.

LHC Rap

September 11th, 2008

This should help you understand what purpose the Large Hadron Collider — which just turned on this week — serves.

It’s pretty astounding when you think about the effort that went into making this thing…

Anyway, here’s the rap:

Today’s battle with Quantum Mechanics

August 28th, 2008

Below is an excerpt from the Quantum book by Shankar.  It’s a great help!  I am loving the explanations to supplement our Sakurai book, anyway — this was a particularly interesting paragraph, which I had to re-read a couple times.

which expresses the antilinearity of the inner product with respect to the first factor
in the inner product. In other words, the inner product of a linear superposition
with another vector is the corresponding superposition of inner products if the super-
position occurs in the second factor, while it is the superposition with all coefficients
conjugated if the superposition occurs in the first factor. This asymmetry, unfamiliar
in real vector spaces, is here to stay and you will get used to it as you go along.

Cheers!

Timmons Planetarium :: Furman University

January 12th, 2008

So, our planetarium has been completed for this term, and I’ve spent a lot of time in there already! We decided it’d be cool to leave the alcove lights on and the windows open [ windows?! in a planetarium!? I know.... I think we're unique.] to come back and take a picture later.

By the way, I added the rest of my personal statement in the previous post, hope you like it. (:

So sorry the images were down! — They’re back up now (:

Here are the results:

UNC Chapel Hill Graduate School Personal Statement Teaser

January 7th, 2008

This is the first paragraph of my statement. I might post the rest if this sparks any interest. (:

I find it increasingly hard to live without the speculation of life elsewhere in the Cosmos. How could it be that a single planet, orbiting a single star, revolving around a single arm of a single galaxy, in a single galaxy cluster is unique? The further I dive into the Cosmos, the more humble I become, and subsequently, the further my desire to dive even deeper. It is fascinating that something so complex, so utterly, unimaginably multifaceted could occupy the thoughts of a twenty something year old more than anything else in the world. It is precisely because of this complexity that it occupies my mind. Astronomy and astrophysics have become my passion. I want to know more at all times; I have an insatiable appetite for astrophysics. Looking up at the stars for most people is inspiring every once in a while, but often taken for granted. For me, looking up at the stars can be quite dangerous. Minutes translate into hours as body heat uniformly dissipates from everywhere except my head, because my mind is spinning immeasurably fast in immense battles of neurotransmitters and chemical reactions creating more heat than even the sun, or so it feels.

My Einstein: Book Review

December 24th, 2007

So I just finished reading My Einstein, and I have to say it was a great read. The book consists of 24 essays by the “World’s Leading Thinkers”, some of which were outstanding, others mediocre, others eh…

Anyways, join me as I share my favorite quotes from the books.

UT Knoxville (CHECK)

Georgia Tech (CHECK)

2/4 done.   Let’s hope this goes well. (:

2 more finals, laters….

PHEW!

December 7th, 2007

It’s been nearly 36 hours since I slept a wink.

But I’m done with Quantum Mechanics, and I’m one manual writing away from being done with Computer Graphics.

Only Classical Mechanics and Electricity and Magnetism left.

I’m going to write about the umbrella soon – look for it.

Exam time

December 4th, 2007

One down… Well not really a scheduled exam, but I took the GRE this morning. Dominated Quantitative, got dominated on Verbal — business as usual. Hopefully it won’t negatively impact my graduate school applications… which I need to get finished, btw.

Emery and I made a video for the ‘Security Awareness Competition’ – I’m going to post that when I get it from him…

I go to the Orthopaedic doctor tomorrow to see what’s wrong with my hamstring…

Need to finish my Graphics project and start studying for finals… then enjoy the completion of this term!

My favorite picture of all time

Hubble Ultra Deep Field Thumb

It’s amazing how much time I have spent just staring at the 36″x36″ poster of this image on the wall in my room.
